Studying in Japan
Japan is the world’s third largest economy and a thriving hub of research and development. Home to some of the world’s leading tertiary institutions, Japan is increasingly keen to attract foreign students and many of its 780 universities have begun to teach a number of courses in English. As living and studying in Japan is relatively expensive, the Japanese Government has introduced financial support for foreign students.
As well as being renowned for invention and industry, Japan is a strikingly beautiful place in which to live and study, with tropical beaches, snow-capped mountains and exquisite gardens. If you are thinking of undertaking work or study in Japan, read on to discover more about its leading universities.
University of Tokyo
The University of Tokyo (‘Todai’) is consistently Japan’s highest ranking university and is among the top ten universities in the world for modern languages, chemistry, physics and astronomy and mechanical and chemical engineering. The university’s main campus, Hongo Campus, is home to many historic buildings from the Edo period, set among landscaped gardens replete with ginkgo trees. On this campus can be found the Sanshiro Pond, which dates to 1615 and is surrounded by what were known as the most beautiful gardens in Edo. The university’s Komaba Campus is home to more modern buildings and hosts the university’s sophomore and freshman population, which it schools in the arts, sciences and mathematical sciences. The Shirokanedai Campus, in contrast, is a purely postgraduate campus and is home to the Institute of Medical Science of the University of Tokyo. University accommodation is available in Tokyo in the form of university-run residences available at lower rent.
Kyoto University
Kyoto University is the second highest ranking university in Japan and the country’s second oldest university; it is among the world’s top 50 institutions for the biological sciences, chemical and civil engineering, physics and astronomy, materials sciences and modern languages. Based in Japan’s old capital city on the island of Honshu, the university spans three campuses. The main Yoshida Campus in Kyoto dates back to 1869 and contains many of the university’s original buildings. The Katsura Campus, also in Kyoto, was conceived as a ‘techno-science hill’ and is dedicated to the study of technology and science; here the modern and the natural interact in interesting ways. The Uji Campus, in the southern outskirts of Kyoto, is dedicated to the study of natural science and energy; its cutting-edge laboratories are surrounded by tranquil greenery. Very limited accommodation is available in the Kyoto University International Houses. Most students live in apartments and other private housing facilities throughout the city.
Osaka University
Osaka University, also known as ‘Handai’, ranks among the top 50 universities in the world for chemistry, physics and astronomy, chemical engineering, dentistry and materials sciences. The university spans three campuses in Osaka, one of Japan’s two urban prefectures. The main campus sprawls across the two cities of Suita and Ibaraki, specialising in dentistry, medicine, the human sciences, pharmaceutical sciences and engineering. The Toyonaka Campus is the first port of call for newcomers to the university and teaches law, letters, economics, science and engineering science. The Minoh Campus is the university’s newest campus, and is dedicated to foreign studies, world languages and Japanese language and culture. Dormitory accommodation and rental apartments are available for international students and visiting scholars on all campuses.
