WA is home to a diversity of traditional and modern universities, many of them in and around Perth, some with campuses located in the most beautiful natural beauty spots in the state, for example, Albany, Broome and Bunbury. If you are looking for a university to make your home, read on to see what WA has to offer.
Curtin University is WA’s largest university, and houses Australia’s third largest international student population. Several campuses are within the Perth metropolitan area, while another is situated in Kalgoorlie, WA’s historic gold-mining town 600 km from Perth. Bentley Campus is the main Curtin campus. Located in the metropolitan area, it exhibits a mixture of stunning modern buildings with original 1960s architecture. The CBD campuses offer a Law School and a Business School, and maintain strong industry links within the CBD. Curtin is the best university in Australia for Mineral and Mining Engineering, and the third best in the world. The university is also deeply involved in Australia’s exciting and largest science project, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). Just recently completed, the SKA will allow scientists to collect information from galaxies previously beyond reach, offering groundbreaking study and employment possibilities in the fields of science and maths. Curtin accommodation is on-campus or off-campus through the Housing Advisory Service.
Edith Cowan University
Edith Cowan University (ECU) has three campuses—two in the Perth metropolitan area, Mount Lawley and Joondalup, and one in the south-west city of Bunbury, the South West Campus. Mount Lawley Campus is only minutes away from the Perth CBD and is home to the renowned Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Joondalup Campus is 25 km north of Perth, close to rail and freeway transport. It displays striking modern architecture and is home to the West Coast TAFE and the Western Australian Police Academy. The South West Campus is situated at the gateway to Western Australia’s stunning South West region, known for its forests (some of the tallest trees in the world), surf, wineries and dolphins. The South West Campus includes the South West Regional College of TAFE and the Bunbury Health Campus. ECU is known as a leader for developing alternative entry pathways to higher education. On-campus accommodation is available at all campuses. Off-campus accommodation can be organised through the ECU Village Website.
Murdoch University’s main campus on South St is just 20 minutes away from either Perth city or the historic port city of Fremantle, home of the ‘cappuccino strip’. The South St campus features expanses of beautiful native bushland and agricultural spaces and is home to Murdoch’s flagship undergraduate course, Veterinary Science. Other specialisations are Nursing and Law. Two more campuses are located at Rockingham and Mandurah, coastal towns south of Perth, offering specialist health courses (with state-of-the-art nursing education facilities) and programs supporting alternative university entrance. Accommodation is offered in Murdoch University Village on-campus. Alternatively, the Murdoch Guild can help you find independent accommodation in the surrounding areas.
University of Notre Dame
The University of Notre Dame is a private Catholic university with WA campuses in the historic limestone port city of Fremantle, and Broome, the remote pearl-harvesting town in the north-west of WA at the western edge of the stunning Kimberly region. Fremantle Campus offers courses across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate disciplines, while the Broome Campus is home to the Nulungu Research Institute, offering expertise in native title, governance, climate change, sustainable farming and futures, and alternative food production, among others. On-campus and off-campus accommodation is available at the Fremantle and Broome campuses through the online accommodation portal. Notre Dame also has a campus in Sydney.
University of Western Australia
The University of Western Australia (UWA) is situated on the Swan River in the picturesque Perth suburb of Crawley. It has two further campuses in Claremont (Perth metropolitan region) and Albany (a seaside town in the south-west of Western Australia). One of Australia’s traditional ‘sandstone universities’—also known as the Group of Eight (Go8)—UWA is a research-intensive university, ranked in the top 1% of academic institutions worldwide alongside the other Go8 institutions. Flagship courses for UWA are in literature, biological sciences, environmental sciences, accounting and finance, anthropology, law and education. The Claremont campus houses the Australian Music Examination Board, the Confucius Institute and the Centre of Muslim States and Societies, while UWA Albany includes the Centre of Excellence in Natural Resource Management, the Rural Clinical School and the UWA Perth International Arts Festival. Accommodation is offered in residential colleges or off-campus through UWA Accommodation.
